CWU's Dave Joyce Bids Farewell To The Union's Health & Safety Community

Visiting Regional Committees across the UK

The longest serving full time, and dedicated officer of the CWU - Dave Joyce - is retiring and has just completed his 'Farewell Tour' of the Union's Health and Safety regional committees in a very personal event during which he was able to say goodbye to individual Union Safety Reps, Area Safety Reps, and Regional Committee officers with whom he has worked for 30 years!

Perhaps, given the timetable and number of cities Dave visited, this was possibly one of his most enjoyable and exhausting programme of events that he has ever undertaken.

With copious briefing notes and salient information with regard to the future of the CWU's Health and Safety structures and campaigns; Daves farewell tour had everything that any 'masterclass' in the history of the CWU H&S culture would need to include. His analysis of the current situation within the Union was impecable in its honesty and showed that his commitment to the success of the CWU moving forward as an indepentent Trade Union within the TUC; is no less dimonished for his retiring from 'active duty'.

Dave's knowledge, sincerity, experience, and personal commitment to the Health, Safety and Environment is irreplaceable, and will surely be missed as the CWU re-organises its structures and profile to further continue its place within the Trade Union movement's H&S community.

Further, and most importantly, Dave's work and campaigns with CWU members, employers, and MPs; has resulted in changes to laws governing both work places and the wider community. His campaigns, Lighten The Load, Dangerous Dogs, and Low Level Letterboxes, not to mention Accoustic Shock have had major results and benefits at work and in the community too.

Chris Ingram, Unionsafeyy Web Editor paid this tribute to Dave whilst wishing him a long and enjoyable retirement:

"The truth of the matter is that the majority of CWU's Health & Safety activists across the country, believe that if it were not for Dave Joyce, the Union's Health & Safety Department would never have existed.

Nor would the CWU's high profile within the TUC and, yes, the HSE and with employers such as the Royal Mail Group; ever have been so prominant and effective when it comes to protecting the Health, Safety, and Environment in which CWU members work and live.

There are many CWU members and activists who owe Dave so much for his help, for his knowledge, and for his support, and I count myself as one of those because of his tireless support for this website, and for the work done to raise the profile of Health & Safety at work, and to support the CWU H&S Community.

It has been a pleasure working with Dave, and I for one will surely miss him."
